New Jersey now requires licensing, registration, and certain safety rules for electric bicycles and motorized bicycles. Requirements vary based on the type of bike you operate.


🚲 Low‑Speed Electric Bicycle

Pedal‑assist only; motor stops assisting at 20 MPH.

Requirements:
• Age 15+
• License: Yes
• Registration: Yes
• Insurance: No
• Helmet: Required if subject to NJ helmet law


⚡ Motorized Bicycle / E‑Bike

May include throttle‑capable bicycles; speeds up to 28 MPH.

Requirements:
• Age 15+
• License: Yes
• Registration: Yes
• Insurance: Yes
• Helmet: Yes


🚦 Rules for All E‑Bike Riders

• Wear a helmet
• Obey traffic signs and signals
• Ride with traffic
• Use proper hand signals
• Use lights at night
• Do not ride distracted
